    Question About Reins, Lost Medical

    Hello SM....

I was a developmental controller back in 2011 at one of the big busy centers (yeah that one). I was about halfway through my training, and was doing great. We had 5 sectors in my area and I had already certified on 3 of the 5... both D and R side. I only had two of the easier sectors to go when I had to go to the ER due to some severe back pain. I figured I sprained something. Wrong. MRI showed what they thought was a malignant tumor on my spinal vertebrae, they were afraid it was going to invade the spinal cord and sever nerves.

Talk about your whole life changing in an instant. Not sure how but I got a letter from the FAA a mere 3 days later explaining my medical was suspended.

Had to make the easiest, tough decision of my life. I resigned from the FAA (fortunately had good health insurance through my spouse) so that I could give my health the attention it deserved. I left the FAA fully expecting that I would be lucky to survive, so it didn't matter much to me about my career goals. Not that I had any good options, I wasn't a CPC yet so I couldn't just become a staff specialist while I worked out my treatment. As a developmental you have to certify - or go. I couldn't work traffic and continue to train, soooo there really wasn't a good option.

Several years and several surgeries later, the tumor that was NOT malignant has been removed. Extensive PT done and I can walk normal now, and have to take zero medication.

Naturally, I want to finish what I started. I would love to get rehired with the FAA now that I am better. But, aside from applying in the ALLSRCE announcement I was curious if anyone knows about options for people who had to resign due to medical certificates being suspended, etc. I'm willing to go through the whole damn process again if I need to, ATSAT, whatever... even going back to AG, don't care. But if there is another way I'm curious what that might be. I just want my chance.

    Thanks for listening,

Edit: Forgot to mention, if the timing didn't make it clear.. academy plus D school and R school and OJT certifying on 3 sectors... I made it past the 1 year and was converted from Temp NTE to Perm.

Glad you're back on your feet and have a good prognosis.

As for reinstatement processing....There isn't. I was a CPC for 7 years and had to apply for the prior exp and the ots bid. You're too late on this ots bid and probably are going to need to wait till next year.

Re: Question About Reins, Lost Medical

I did apply to the OTS bid that just closed........... thankfully. My last checkup which would determine whether I could qualify for a medical or not was a few days before it closed (before the extension). So I got in just in time.

Ok, hopefully if I made it through once, I can make it through again
