I would think the tower would be rated a 10, assuming the traffic is anything like JFK or LGA. They are both a 10. Tracon should stay at the same level (12). What do you guys think?

About the cost of living. I wouldn't mind living in MIA. I currently live in NYC. The rent is ridiculous!

Makes sense, especially if the TRACON would be a "South Florida TRACON." Though FLL/PBI would probably drop to 7.

    Miami twr/tracon

I noticed that someone put up a post requesting information on how things were at Miami tower/tracon. I didn't see much feed back on how the facilities themselves are. If it's a good working environment or not. I am a prior FAA controller looking to get reinstated and am hoping to get to Miami if not then somewhere in south central/southern Florida. If anyone works at Miami twr or has heard anything about it I would appreciate some info. I have family in Miami and go there a couple of times a year so I know what Miami itself is like. Thanks!!!

MIA did not split as everyone said it would on January. There is language specifically in HR 915 ordering that a Tracon be built at PBI. It will probably stay in the Senate version to...since it was put in there by Congressman Oberstar. Right now everyone here at PBI is getting more optimistic that a Tracon will be built here. After my previous post, I've seen how bad the FAA muffed up this MIA consolidation so I have changed my mind and now hope we stick it to them and get our Tracon!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Miami Tower/TRACON - MIA

Yes I am well aware that this thread is almost three years old and I'm sure most of the "news" I am about to provide is already known by SMers:

As it stands right now, PBI will NOT be a victim of consolidation. The agency has decided, after several members of Congress and NATCA had a few stern words, to build a TRACON at the new PBI tower, so they won't be going anywhere for quite some time.

MIA is in no danger of splitting anytime soon. It is a solid 12 up/down. There are two sets of controllers: A-siders and B-siders. A-siders must check out in the tower and 7 of the 13 operational positions in the TRACON to achieve CPC (we've recently had a few people check out in the tower, but wash out in radar training).

B-siders are assigned to radar only and must work all 13 positions for CPC.

FLL will officially be downgraded to an 8, and lost LRAC capabilities a few years ago but due to the runway construction going on and increased workload and traffic count, management has petitioned to the FAA and made a case as to why they should maintain their current level. They do believe the agency will relent and restore them back to a 9. (Preliminary paperwork has also begun to petition Congress to upgrade to a Class B airport, using NYC and DC area airports as an example. I don't expect to have any news on that for a long time, if ever, before I leave there)

Anyway, I hope I was able to clear up any questions people have about the South Florida facilities (I just found out the information with FLL this past week myself)

    Re: Miami Tower/TRACON - MIA

I have several friends at MIA. I know people who live in Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale, Weston, and one as far north as Deerfield Beach. It kind of depends on what you're looking for. Family lifestyle or single looking for a good time, those kinds of things. Miami traffic BLOWS so while driving from north of Lauderdale may not seem like a big deal, I wouldn't recommend it. They do seem to schedule shifts away from rush hour, though, as much as possible.

I think training depends on whether you're A side or B side and what kind of facility you're coming from. I've known people from low level VFR towers to completely rock it; I've seen people with high level TRACON experience wash out in the lab. From what I've heard attitude goes a long way there. Can't tell you much about current morale or the current training situation; just observations from being at a close by facility and knowing several people who have gone through there.
