    Miami Tower/TRACON - MIA

Is there anyone here that is either at, or going to MIA Tower? I have just been given an offer there, and was wondering what everyones thoughts are. Thanks for any advice!

I wonder if they're going to split MIA into separate areas like they have Potomac, since they're consolidating Palm Beach International in there.

When I visited MIA, they had 15 operational scopes according to our guide. There were 3 in the corner that were reserved for PBI, making a total of 18. That's a heck of a lot of scopes for one person to train on. I'm not saying it's impossible, but that's a long way to go to certification.

Maybe it'd make sense to split the facility into two areas of 9 scopes each. Kind of how Potomac has one area for Dulles, one for Baltimore, etc. There could be a North area and a South area. The North side would handle FLL, PBI, and all the satellite airports north of FLL (like FL Exec, Boca Raton, and Pompano). The South would work MIA and all of the satellite fields south of FLL (like Homestead ARB, Tamiami, Opa Locka, and North Perry).

Then again, the most sensible thing would be to just leave PBI's TRACON where it is.... As a veteran of many hurricanes (Andrew, Katrina, Wilma, Jeanne, etc.) a little redundancy can go a heck of a long way. PBI and MIA as they are right now serve as "backup generators" for each other, as they're spaced far enough apart that a single hurricane won't hit both of them hard unless it pulls a Hurricane Hugo and just rides the coastline.

The whole Miami area is one big political mess right now. Check out http://www.faahope.com/ for information about what is going on in that area of the NAS.

I work at Palm Beach. Looks like things are leaning toward a consolidation sometime in 2010. MIA is scheduled to be split this January and all trainees there now were told their training would end in the tower. This I do know for a fact. So if you got Miami Tower you will not be training in the radar room. I am hoping for a consolidation because it would mean a good raise and no longer working on the Arts IIE. There are a lot of FPLs in disagreement with me but I have to look out for the family and if the proposal comes to fruition I would have no choice but to go. But who knows...they may stomp this thing out...things change so much that I won't believe it until I am sitting in front of a scope at MIA.

To the ZMA dude....do you work any of the Palm Beach areas?? If so..talk to you tomorrow!

Not sure where that fellow got their info, but it's pretty common knowledge that the FAA wants to split every up/down they can.

It really sucks because from a training standpoint up/downs give you the greatest amount of knowledge since you are working both areas. You get a solid picture of how it all fits together (and what happens if it isn't). If you ever wanted to transfer, it would open doors to a lot more facilties than if you had just a radar certification or just a tower certification.

MCO (Orlando, FL) is a possibility for consolidation into Miami, but MEM (Memphis, TN), CLT (Charolette, NC), and CVG (Cincinnati-Covington, OH) are to far from Miami to be viable choices for consolidation.

It would be more rational for MEM and CVG to be consolodated into IND (Indianapolis, IN), and CLT into PCT (Potomac Tracon, VA). But, then again, whoever said that the FAA was rational.

Actually, the point of it was that all of those facilities are currently Up & Down but are heavily rumored to be split into separate Tower/TRACON. The MIA deal is just an example of how the FAA will justify consolidation of TRACONS... Less is more in their eyes.

    re: Miami Tower/TRACON - MIA

Two things. Like the Miami Center controller mentioned, the cost of living in Miami is outrageous. I worked at Opa Locka tower which is 7 miles north of International and our little 1 bed/ 1 bath apartment was $1210 before utilities, and no guaranteed parking spot. We lived in Miramar which is just North of the city. However, you do have the beach.... well everywhere and water to fish in. So it's a trade off, but an expensive one.

Reference the question about splitting. You can probably count on that happening in the future, but probably not until well after PBI is co-located. As far as the mention of a "Large TRACON" in Indy. Yeah, not gonna happen. Cincy may get split, but even that is not as talked about since their traffic died down with Comair pulling planes and the Northwest/Delta merger.

If a facility consolidates does that mean the facility that got the additional sector would raise in level thus increasing pay? Is that what your saying about a raise?

And along the same lines...If and when MIA splits into 2 separate facilities, what do you think the facility level will be? For example, it is a level 12 up/down right now, by splitting will it lower the level for both the Tracon and Tower??
