On the Military side I know my base NAS Whiting Field, is one of the busiest facilities in the US. We conduct over 1400 flight ops/per day, 1.3 millions ops annually! 15% of the Navy's flight ops come from here. We are the backbone of the military, 97% of student Naval Aviator start their careers here from all branches USN, USAF, USCG, USMC, USA & foreign National countries. We don't have anything fancy just T-34's and H-57's. 9 squadrons 2 airfields back to back connected with taxiways, 14 NOLFs (Navy Outlying Fields) and a shit load of traffic. Were so busy we have something called split field operations, where you can have an aircraft on the runway midfield, while aircraft are landing on the first half of the runway! Constant landings and departures all day!

lol... 1400x365 is only 511,000... thats about a third of 1.3 million ops annually.

its called an LOA and all military airports have it with locally assigned aircraft, especially fighters.

Define flight Ops....I mean what I think a flight operation is either take off, landing, transition, or maybe something else...I guess just the three...so I think a million flight ops a year is def possible...I don't know how ATL or those other airports do it but its amazing....Diego Garcia was soo funny cause we would have just a few flight ops a day...like a hand full.

I'm sure Houston and Balad are probably way busier and complex than anything I've been to so I will defer to you on it.
It was never the busiest facility in the world. It was busiest single runway operation for a while but not long and currently not even close. That's all I was getting at...

It depends on the location and time frame you were there. I had a buddy working when they took an RPG through the equipment room below the cab. I'm sure you're right though nothing has ever happened at a deployed airfield...

i think he meant contract tower in Iraq. they make a shit-load. a lot more than the FAA pays. maybe not as much as some of the old folk in the FAA, but pretty close.

definitely not active duty controllers in Iraq. they don't make squat.

    Re: Busiest Facility

I've been checked out at ORBD (BALAD) back in the "heyday". I was there when the "equipment" room got hit by an rpg...and that stories a bit of a stretch. The rocket hit Bravo shattered didn't explode and part of it came through the window. It rocked the tower but nothing serious. If you've ever seen that tower, a strong wind can put it on it's side. I've also got to repel down the sides of that thing "Aussie" style peeking in to the Chiefs window upside down. I've worked there when C17's shot flares 20 feet off the departure end starting a fire around our one decent runway. I turned a C-5 the wrong way on the only taxiway to avoid his lazy exiting of the runway causing another A/C up his ass. I've been there when the targeting guns (can't remember their name) went off. They're not but a few hundred feet from the cab and can sure light up a night sky. I was there when mulitple planes didn't come back with their crews. I've seen a C-23 Sherpa flying so low he popped out of the treeline. I've seen that same Sherpa pilot come back pissed because he took fire, it's a really funny story, if you ever get to work there the Sherpa pilots are the shit. I was there when pretty much anything you can think of happen, happened. I mean shit it was the rainy season so the weather was shit too. The 2 runway configuration works out beautifully as long as you're not a tool relying on some backwards AFI or some outdated LOA to save your ass. Over there it's mission before safety as long as its not threatening one of "our" lives then its fine. Don't keep all the helo's between the runways, make the pattern work do their patterns to the farside parrallel at or above 200ft and the auto runs have access to the center cod. that way you can depart the little silly shit from pad 4 and everyone else from the close runway. I spent 6 months at that shit hole and it wasn't that complicated, back when it was at it's climax during the troop surge. Where am I now? ORD (O'Hare) ground control is more complex here than local was there. That place is the highlight of any AF member because that's all you get. That place is little league compared to what we do at O'Hare. If you're in the AF and want to work, come to the FAA; or ask archie manning (no real names) about his contract tower you'll get your ass kicked up there too.

Oh yeah I forgot, right before I left they built that rainbow road or whatever it's really called, the one that gets you from one ramp to the other on the tower side. Ground was annoying before that road but not complicated.

    Jake,

What do the C-23's do over there. I didn't even know what it was until you mentioned them. Of course, at the center all of the airplanes look like this.... \ \ \ \

    Re: Busiest Facility

Yeah ATL is prolly busiest in the world, Balad is busiest in DOD. ATL also has like 2 LC and 2 GC with LC assist keeping track of ops as to tell the LC's when they can launch (sometimes no possible way you can keep track of all that crap) as where Balad is 1 LC 1 GC and 1 dipshit in Data that can't get local rated. But busier facilities are not always that complex. Sometimes slower facilities with complex airspaces and procedures can be trickier than the busier facilities, so you can't measure level of difficulty off of traffic count.

    die in a fire polo
I got deployed as an A1C (AF, was in for 2.x yrs when deployed). At that time I was told "sry balad wants SRA or higher cause they got more experiance".

Bull shit. So they sent some worthless terrible 6 year SrA to balad and he sucked, while I went to Ali AB (talil iraq) and rocked the house single scope for every operation style.
