Saying "with you" in communication with ATC

I've been arguing with my flight instructor the past few weeks whether or not it is correct to say "with you" on intitial contact. For example, "Grand Forks departure, Sioux Sexy Nine with you, one-eight thousand". As opposed to saying, "Grand Forks departure, Sioux Sexy Nine climbing, one-eight thousand". Which do you think is more correct and why?

The fact that your talking to the controller means that your "with him", so its just excess verbage. IMO, don't do it.

    Re: With You?

as a flight instructor, I NEVER taught my students that. and if they said it, i would correct them. not needed as it's pretty obvious

it's not really a right or wrong, just ties up the frequency that much longer.

Arguing with an instructor is never a good idea, if you don't agree with it fine. After you get your cert. , if your so intent on saying it, then you can do what you want.

"with you" is lame. so is saying 1-8 thousand instead of FL180.

problem is that i think he ment to say one thousand eight hundred lol... I doubt many warriors (if su69 is still a warrior) can make it to fl180. maybe his instructor should have taught him proper alt reporting phraseology.

    Re: With You?

I had a CFI who went ballistic if he heard someone say "with you". Some people hate it, some don't care. Two extra words isn't really much of a frequency tie-up, but I guess if you're counting seconds... er, second.... it's not really necessary.

I think a lot of people do it subconciously because it feels awkward to just identify with no request. Regardless of whether they understand that all is necessary is to show that you're on the frequency, it feels strange to some to not explain why. "With you" is mental justification for keying up the mic.

I have a habit of doing it (or did, when I could afford to fly) thanks to FSX. The radio voice says it, so I'll drop it once in awhile when I'm not thinking about it.

I like it, it makes me feel special. I'm always for any meaningless banter that ties up the frequency for no real purpose other than to build some type of pilot-controller pseudo-comraderie feel good moment.

I am going to have to respond to an ATC request with "hold on a second, I'm not with you right now" one of these days..

That's why I always say something like, "Houston Center, nine four seven charlie tango is thrilled to be on your frequency and is looking forward to a productive and operational error free relationship. XOXO"

Sweet. Wait till my trainer hears my mad skillz as I bust out a "Good day, Delta flight four fifty nine! Welcome to Los Angeles Center sector five! Current altimeter is blah blah blah, with winds at blah blah. We're looking at a lot of sunshine today, but your weekend may be a bit cloudy as a storm front comes in from the west. In sports, the Cowboys are looking to turn around their season with a win against the Browns. You just give me a call if there's anything I can do for you, and have a great day!"

    Blocked frequency THAT.

Re: Saying "with you" in communication with ATC

    nice thread!

i think its ok. its annoying, but nowhere does it say pilot cant or should not say it.

its great to say like at night if local and ground are combined and he lands, you give him taxi instructions, and tell him "remain this frequency"

when he reads back taxi instruction, then "with you" that is the only time its not annoying.

I WILL say its way less annoying than a pilot who sits on freq. when you have stuff to do to tells you his life story!!

I wish more people would use 'over;' it's good for when you talk like a retard because you neglect to think of what you're going to say before you jump on and end your transmission with the inflection of your tone going up like you're asking a quesTION? Then it gets really awkward cuz no one actually knows if you're done or if you had more to say so then you can say 'over.'

Unless you say "N12345 with you level 1-8 thousand, over."
