Will Military Experience and Going to School for Atc Help Land a Job

I'm thinking about joining the army reserves and when I get back from basic training start school. Will both an aviation degree and military reserve experience help land me a job faster than just going to school and applying?

Well being a Vet you get 5point preference automatically but not being a vet with actual ATC experience hurts you. The main thing about the degree is that it's a 4 year degree, as thats what the public announcement feb 10th requires or 3 years consecutive work experience (full time I think). If you really wanna do ATC though, why not actually go into one of the branches and DO ATC, while you get your aviation degree...That's what I did...Joined AF ATC, got my BS degree in aeronautics while i was in, and applied under a VRA announcement and waiting on a class date. Why reserves?

Yeah TeeLeww, Breezy is right there. I'm prior USMC controller and at the time i got in it did help me because they had separate bids for CTO, VRA, CTI, and OTS but now with this one bid for all the experience it doesn't help at all. I actually talked to HR yesterday because my wife who is prior military as well is putting in for this bid and HR said that her ATC experience won't matter. The two things that will carry weight are vet points and an already existing AT-SAT score. Do like Breezy said. Besides, controlling in the military is good stuff. It's a completely different side of the military people don't know exists.

This is very inaccurate. Prior ATC experience is highly likely to be part of the bio-data questionairre which will carry weight in the hiring procress. In addition, an expired or old AT-SAT score will have absolutely no bearing on your hiring this round.

To piggy-back this statement, the items that hold the most wait are the AT-SAT and veterans preference. I find it asinine that prior controllers are having to compete for a position in the first place.

Okay AF_ATC, did you even read what I said?? I TALKED TO HR YESTERDAY! And I didn't talk to the ones down in OKC I talked to the HR for the active FAA controllers. She flat out said that the prior ATC experience won't really matter at this point but the Vet points and the At-Sats will carry the most weight. I'm sure it will be on the questionairre but I'm telling you straight from the source that it won't carry much weight... Very inaccurate. Call the HR at Great Lakes and tell them that like they don't know what they're talking about.

Hmmmm… Working planes as an actual controller will carry no weight when applying for a job as an ATC…? Yeah sounds about right.

I'm just letting you guys know what HR said. Don't be dicks about it. I've been in the agency for a little bit now and I hear what you're saying I'm just trying to help out and give all of you about to apply a heads up. You want to get on someone's case? Again, call HR and tell them they're full of it.

To be fair, if you were in this situation, you'd be in denial too.

I think the hangup here is that you're talking to your HR, they probably arent up to speed on the new hire HR stuff. OKC has relased FAQ's and posted on the website the the BIO-Q will have questions regarding prior ATC experience. From my understanding your BIO-Q+AT-SAT+Preference points will be added together to give you your ranking out of the applicants.

You're absolutely right. I'm not sure about HR not knowing what's going on but something you guys might not be considering is the Vet people who aren't prior controllers. When I first got in I was in Tower class with a Mortar guy, a mechanic, and few other non ATC vets. They all get those Vet points too and most of them have 10 points. I'm not a big fan of that because prior experience should be the overall heaviest hitter in my opinion. I know the prior ATC will carry some weight, HR was just saying that the Vet points and At-sat will be the biggest. Who knows the percentage of that but she kept harping on Vet points to me. "5 points is good but 10 points is great" exact words.

If the FAA is going to CTI applicants over then why not just everyone equally and just hire vets.

Spoke with the Eastern Regional Rep to my DOD facility...ATC experience does count towards your score for the new hiring announcement. Don't expect HR to know anything about the announcement as they have ZERO input in the process.

I wonder how much weight it will hold. For example, it sounds like the biggest weight holders are AT-SAT scores and Vet preference. I wonder if ATC experience ranks up there with these thigns as well.

Bro as an Army 'controller'... be very careful about your next move. If you want to do ATC through the military, go AF. If you just want to join the military to pay for school or serve your country, the Army is an honorable way to serve. The Army is very handicapped when it comes to ATC

Unless anything has changed in regards to Vets, it used to be if you're a vet, you're automatically considered above the rest, preference wise, without any points. The old VRA announcements were for vets with prior ATC experience so that would've been above the other vets, then the point system would be 5 points if you were deployed in a time of war and received a medal for that deployment, and an another 5 points for disabled vets having the form from the VA.
