    How Do I "Ask a Professional"?

    Hi:
    I registered for the forum because I would like to "Ask a professional" (ATC) a question. But when I click on the link I get a note that I do not have permission to post in this forum.

    Ahhh, too easy

    So my basic question is this:
    I was recently (10/19) scheduled to fly from LGA to RDU on a the last flight of the evening out of LGA, which was only about half full. American Airlines then cancelled the flight and said that ATC closed to route from LGA to RDU, even though the weather was beautiful in both cities. I understand that this may be an overly simplistic view of the factors that could affect ATC, but it just seemed very suspicious to me. It was quite convenient for AA because they could just shrug and tell us that we are on our own for hotel/meals, etc. So, is there any way to find out:
    a.) if, in fact, this was true
    and
    b.) why ATC closed the route

    Thanks for any insight or help that anyone can provide...

    I don't know, but it is simplistic to say weather is great at point a and point b and ignore the weather along your1,000 mile long route.

    I've been on canceled flights before with people screaming bloody murder using that logic ignoring the fact a hurricane was between them and their destination.

    Odds are is that there weather enroute from LGA to RDU. This probably meant that the flight was going to get a delay on the ground and also a large reroute around the weather. Perhaps RDU has a curfew and doesn't allow flights after a certain time frame. I'm not sure on that but it is possible.

    Also since there isn't one route from A to B, it seems odd that the route would be closed. Maybe the original/normal route is closed but there is generally another way to get from A to B around the weather. The only other factor that I can think of is that, the flight being on the east coast, obviously traffic volume there is massive and the smallest amount of weather can affect things. Plus the RJ you were probably on might not have the range to fly 1000s of miles out of the way of the storm.

    If an airline cancels a flight due to ATC, it's my understanding that it takes them off the hook for costs of lodging, meals, et cetera that would normally be paid out to passengers. You could always look on flightaware and see if others flights out of NYC went to RDU or nearby airports. If they did, I would be willing to bet that the flight wasn't going to make money and they cancelled to not eat the loss.

    They were definitely off the hook, they made that abundantly clear. I am basically trying to find a little "evidence" of shenanagins so I can go back to AA and ask them to reimburse me for my hotel.
