    Greetings!

Let us see if I can 'explain' myself without writing a short story. Been told I can get carried away with words.
Born in Waco TX. Wife from Eastbourne England, 2 sons- one MSgt (f/sgt)-the other is a professional student. Family full of Military types. Dad, Mom, Uncles and Grandfathers on both sides. I was the black sheep. I went in and remained enlisted. No regrets!! Did 24 years. The first few were in what today is called TACP. I had clues that the job would not be much fun -- all the training (after Kessler) was at Fort Hood Texas. After the first year (1968) in sunny RVN I extended for a special duty assignment. Saigon ATC Center. Go figure. Busy as Bat S#$%, no training beyond tech school. Initially I was in way over my head. Got lucky with an X FAA type helping me along. After that I did get to go through the normal ATC training program at Randolph. Worked both East and West (hangover) Towers and both GCA's. West side still had the GCA model before MPN-11. 64bit codes and cold as heck. The next 6 years were great. 2 MOB in Sembach then Lindsey AS. TDY over 50%. From N. Norway to N. Africa and many stops in between. Got into the Terps game about 1975. Did a lot of TERPS stuff @ mainz-kastel and checking civil airports for the next two years. Did the Controller Exchange Program in France (sucked), Germany (great!) Italy, UK and Denmark. Stateside short visit to Mather, then Galena AK, Loring ME - back to Germany at Hahn then Zweibrucken (best!). Lastly Selfridge and out. Did 10+ @ DFW as Airport Train Controller then as Airfield Ops Staff Officer. Then from 2011-2017- DOD and DOS contracts in middle east (6 in AFG, 2 in IRQ). Wish I had started the contract life earlier. Loved it all. From the north, middle, far east, far west and southern desert as ATC and Airfield Manager. Not a bad one in the bunch. As for Iraq? Nice equipment, nice people within the Air Ops family..rest of it? Zero fun. Currently 'playing' as an Aviation Subject Matter Expert for Army Contracting Command @ Rock Island Arsenal.
    I did go overboard. sorry.
When I can't chew my food - I will retire!
Looking forward to re-connecting to the group. I joined while in AFG and really did not get active here.

Would you recommend TACP to a 26 year old with a degree in ATC?

    Re: Greetings!

    Yes..but with conditions:
    1. Enjoy falling out of aircraft (on purpose-no acft issues) and putting the hurts on your body and mind from time to time.
    2. You have an ATC mind - a special forces type conditioned body - and a Marines drive to be the best of the best.

Not that I had any of those- times change. I had some levels of the above - that combined with the military's need at that time for individuals who knew the technical side but were goofy enough to attempt the physical/mental punishment side. So, I had the skills and was over the top on the goofy requirement. I fit right in. And got right out when the goofy level dropped. You have to want it above most all else.
Me? I enjoyed the game set challenge or environment of ATC along with the EGO increase of doing something most could not do...and knowing I did it better than anyone else. ok the last is, of course, my opinion...but I like it.
I have had the most fun anyone can have ......and still be dressed. Not a job to me. Really it is enjoyable, fun and a great challenge. Not a job at all.

Don't take the next bit wrong... I mean to help while being truthful.....

Bottom line? When you want it bad enough - you won't care what others say or suggest. You probably won't even ask. You will just do it. Are you there yet?
