FWIW: A total of 5 VRA-ONLY (linked above) ATSS technician disciplines opened this morn. Former military could apply to get your foot in the door w/the FAA. Although not an ATC position, if hired you would be working next door to a Tracon, Tower or Center. Nothing would prevent you from attempting to transfer into ATC which should be much simpler since you would already be a FAA federal employee!

ERAU CTI, over 500 flight hours, Black Hawk pilot, NOT ELIGIBLE. Wish I would've studied engineering. Waited 3 years to be told not eligible. Some 20 year old with three years of screwing up my order at McDonald's will now get my dream job.

Stop complaining and apply to the next one. Or go back to flying Blackhawks.

I don't have a dog in this fight, and I understand all those who have prior military ex. being upset. But I believe that filing will be useless. And here's why, when the FAA does a VRA panel everyone without military preference is excluded. So the FAA has filled it's obligation to give military preference. So when they open up an OTS panel they can now use whatever matrix they want or deem creditable to reduce the pool down.
