I'm currently going through the process to join the AF to do ATC. The recruiter told me i have to to an aptitude test and the only information i found was that it was similar to the AT-SAT. i was wondering if anyone knew anymore information on it. would be greatly appreciated.

The best way to prepare is go online and search for asvab practice tests or go to your local library and get a practice asvab book. Don't take the asvab lightly because it'll determine what jobs you're eligible for. Also, if you don't score high enough on your first asvab test, don't worry, you can always take it again. I believe you have to wait 6 months though. Good luck

thank you but I'm not speaking about the ASVAB. there is another test you have to take after the ASVAB. you need to take the ASVAB, TAPAS (personality test), Medical and an aptitude test and pass them all to get the position. at least if you want it on your contract. apparently the aptitude test is a fairly new addition to the process so their isn't much information on it, im scheduled to take it the 11th and all iv heard is that it is similar to the AT SAT.

Ahhh ok, well yea, when I joined the air force in 2008, you only had to take the asvab and score high enough to get guaranteed ATC

i wish lol ya the process has changed a lot. seem to be coping a lot of what the FAA does now. Do you mind if i direct message you and ask you a few questions about the bases and such? would help me a lot.

I went through the process in 2013. I got a guaranteed spot from only testing via the asvab. From what I know with the new guys/gals coming in there are no other test. Not to include all the testing in tech school and the constant testing for the on the job training, followed by the monthly profiecency tests. You just have to test high enough on the asvab and then make it through the 4 month tech school. After that’s it’s the 6 months to a year and a half of on the job training. That’s all depending on whether you go to a tower or radar facility and the complexity of the facility itself. Also if there’s a back log of trainees. All and all from what I know there is no personality test. Hope all goes well the career field needs more people.

I'm telling you lol it's REALLY new. I just came back from MEPS (not fun) and when going over the jobs im qualified for (i got 88 on general 90 on mechanical 78 on admin and 82 on electrical, so i can get basically any job that does not require additional testing) I was told by both my recruiter and the AF sergeant at MEPS that i am required to do an additional test for ATC. I'm scheduled to take it Jan 8th because it is only administered the 2nd Tuesday of every month (at least here in florida)

You're not gonna find anything about it online but when I was at MEPS in March, (Didn't get to take the test while I was there either) I talked to a guy who did take it and all he really said was that it is a radar simulation type of deal with arrivals coming from every direction and you have to separate them with keyboard functions and point them at the airports they're assigned. Nothing you can really study for. I was turned down for ATC cuz my uncorrected vision is 20/220... walked outta there.

Yes, they said I could get LASIK but would have to wait 6 months to re-enlist. That’s stanadard procedure after the surgery for any branch of the military. Took me 5 months to get to MEPs with student loan waivers and some other things lol but I decided to try the ole FAA route again on the July OTS and we’re waiting for TOLs to go out now. AF for me is a gamble as I’m 25 and if the rule switches back for everyone’s age limit being 31 instead of how currently veteran’s is 35, I’d be cuttin it too close... Good luck!

Hey Michael,While I was still looking to do ATC w/ the Air National Guard, the recruiter gave me this PPT about the test you will take. It is pretty much the same as the old radar sim. in the AT-SAT. You can actually practice and play this game on either stuckmic or pointsixtyfive somewhere, but I don't have time to look for it right now. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mfOcqOrX743RXDx9_6xC52tjEYd7r2sY/view?usp=sharing

oh this is awesome! thank you so much! I have ATC prep and i believe they still have the ATSAT games on there. Hows ATC with the Guard? would you recommend it? there is no Air National Guard base that have ATC in Florida.

Yep, no problem! Didn't go through with the ANG because an FAA OTS bid came up, and i ended up getting my TOL. From what I've researched, It seems like a very solid way to get your foot into ATC. Many ANG ATC's also control for the FAA full-time. If you have the means to move states, I'd recommend it. Make sure you talk to the actual controllers on base to see what the opportunites are like there, however.
