So I just finished my tour of ZTL today and it was quiet exciting. The people there are nice and the trainers are really nice. There are a lot of construction and upgrades being done and new systems being implemented there soon.

I got the tour from the contractor there and he told me everything that I will be going through at the training in ZTL, after I pass OKC of course.
The pass rate there is ~99% from what I was told, in the past year, only 1 person out of 130 people washed out. But he also told me as long as you get past stage 2, you will most likely get transferred to a lower level facility.

If anyone has any questions on ZTL feel free to ask me!

I highly highly doubt the claim of 99% wash rate (or success rate). The wash rate at ZOA, which is a lowly level 11 is somewhere around 20%. Maybe the guy was just saying that to make you feel better about it. Or maybe they just hadn't washed somebody yet this year because their not really training much. Who knows why it would be 99% success but again I highly doubt it. I've seen higher wash rates at contract towers.

Now I know the guy was blowing smoke to you cuz just because you get past stage 2 does not mean you'll get a lower level facility. My class had 8 pass stage 2 and make it to ZOA. Of the 8, 2 washed out in stage 3 classroom and DID NOT get a lower facility. 1 more passed stage 3 and washed on his D-sides, did NOT get a lower facility. Yet another passed stage 4 and washed on the R-sides and still did NOT get a lower level facility. This was a couple years back though so it might've changed.

Anyway, sorry for sounding like a Scrooge. I just wanted you to know that even though this guy was saying all these exciting things, it may not be true.

Re: Toured ZTL

From what I have seen in ZAB, YOU have to go look for another position in the FAA, there are plenty to be had in all sorts of positions not just as controllers and I have seen people get them. It is good to know that there are other opportunities in the agency, just in case you don't make in the one you are sent to. The trick is do the best you can, try hard and be dependable. You end up with people behind you and you should get some kind of job. Pretty much common sense.

The 99% success in stage 2 sounds about right, pretty much the same at ZAB.

Maps and LOA's?? wow... a bit different than being plugged in. I would hope that stages 1 and 2 are 100% haha.

sorry just read the OP again. i think he was told that 99% of trainees pass stage 2. that would be absolutely true. i apologize. i initially thought he was told that 99% of trainees make FPL. that would be absolutely false. sorry for misunderstanding the OP.

Is there anyone that can provide some insight into the current situation in ZTL? How is the construction that the OP talked about coming along?

Any recent feedback on the training program?

Thanks for the feedback!

I just toured there last Friday after my interview. EVERYONE there is super nice, and loves their job. It seems the construction is all done because I did not see any.

I toured ZSE last month, and it is basically the same only about double the size.

The training contractor is very nice, and all the instructors there are retired ZTL controllers. They seem to pride themselves on having everyone succeed.

Hope that helps. If not just ask me more questions.

Thankfully I am driving down to tour ZTL later this week. If any of you have any burning questions you'd like me to find out for you I'm willing to ask for you. Just send me a PM.

I just toured it on this past Saturday, and Im crossing my fingers they pick me up in this next panel. Its a really cool place. My buddy and fellow CTI grad/classmate is doing the CTI internship there, and works in the traffic management unit. Those guys are really cool and chill. Its a really big building and is easy to get lost. From the outside or to your ordinary person, you would never imagine the importance of what goes on in there. After touring all the offices, you will finally go down into the dark, basement-like control room (where all the magic happens), all the controllers will stare at you. Be prepared haha. You will enjoy it though. Post what you think after your tour and tell us what your thoughts were if you dont mind!

There is no real construction. They are building a new porch on the side of the building for us to BBQ on and possibly move the ping-pong table on to.

ZTL does have a 100% pass rate through D-school right now. There is a small attrition rate after that on the D-sides. I would say 95-98% get their D-sides. If you are going to wash at ZTL, it will be in R-school. There is an incredible training team there and they will help you as much as possible. As long as you are willing to learn, they will take the time to get you through it.

ZTL is a typical center. There are assholes and nice people. There are some areas that are easier than others. It is the busiest ATC facility in the world and the easiest area here is as hard as pretty much the busiest at other facilities. ZTL has the same equipment as every other center. We are generally the last facility to get new stuff. For instance we are number 18 on the ERAM list. We were around the same for URET.

I thoroughly enjoy working here and assure you that you will be afforded every opportunity to become a CPC. Atlanta is also a great city and, if for some reason you wanted to go the management route; there is A80, ATL tower, and a regional office here. You can make all of the career moves you need without ever selling your house.

Good Luck and best wishes.
