I toured ZTL today, here are the things that stuck out (Things I was told, hopefully the head trainer was not leading me astray):

+ I was told they are hiring 60 people in FY10 and FY11
+ In past year 90% of new hires have been OTS (I was very surprised by this)
+ Was told that at the panels the applications are chosen in order of ATSAT score
+ 3 years to become CPC is the norm
+ High check out rate, I don't think he gave a percentage.
+ They train to your weaknesses in order to make sure you are proficient in all areas
+ There is a child care facility directly next door to ZTL that is open 24 hours
+ New computer system coming next year, I'm not clear if it was fiscal or calendar year
+ Within .25 mile of Atlanta Motor Speedway
+ Pretty country area, the trainer even said you can still by farm land a little bit to the South

Overall I was happy that I put GA as my 1st choice for PUBNAT 7. As other people have said everyone I came in contact with was friendly. I was shocked at how quiet that the control room was. I definitely was expecting at least more background noise/mummer. It also seemed very relaxed inside each sectors control area. That was reassuring and the trainer made me feel like although it is a level 12 center that an OTS can succeed as long as they do their part.

Also, my attempts to network in order to improve my chances of being selected were rebuffed. I was told that all hiring is done "centrally" and that they have no input at all untill you show up at the facility as a trainee.

I still felt the tour was well worth it. It was the first tour I have done and now I am looking to tour a tower or Up/Down facility to get a feel for that environment.

I went there also during summer.....5 of my riddle clasmates and dormates were already including one of my friends....lady who does the hiring was apprently good friends with one of my dormates and she was impresed by him...she said she wrote my name down and my friend who works there said she asked for me so I'm hoping the scores some points.....sometimes it seems it really is who you know....

The place was SUPER quiet though.....very relaxed for a lvl 12 facility...my friend says its tough though but hes getting it now.....best of luck though especially with this month's panel being "postponed" don't know how true it is i haven't spoken to anyone to confirm it as yet.....damn sure hope it ain't

How long will it take a CPC to check out there? Got a friend who is trying to transfer there from another level 12 facility. How is the environment? Are people repectful to each other? Do the controllers stay out of each other's personal life? Are the people friendly? How well do management and controllers get along? Is there a huge Union presence there?

Kind of off subject....My husband will be at ZTL next year (pub6 & waiting for a class date). I'm thinking of moving to Peachtree City for the schools, low crime, and atmosphere. However, I have noticed that Hampton's home prices are extremely low and there are a lot of foreclosures in that area. Did a big employer move out of the city? Did builders over estimate the growth rate? Or, are the foreclosures a result of people not being able to hack it as controllers there? Is Hampton a good city? :leaving:

#1 Reason you DONT take out a mortgage until you reach CPC.
That's my thing. I'll be heading to ZTL following the academy. I have a house in Tucker, Ga which is about 50 miles away from the center. That is not a drive that I am even thinking about doing on a daily basis. However, when I sell my house, I'll probably rent in Peachtree City until I reach CPC. Peachtree City is a very nice (golf cart) area to live and raise your family in. Housing there can be expensive though. I'd have to depend on CPC bucks to get the house I want in that area.

Hampton does have some great deals on houses going on. I could have 3 times more house for what I am paying now. The areas are ok, it's just a little too rural, and a little to conservative for me.

Case and point, when I went to Hampton for my interview, there were a few houses across the street from ZTL. There was a little old lady in her front yard staking a sign in her yard that read "Obama, Who's stupid now" following the Henry Louis Gates Jr. incident.

I don't care what your political beliefs are but posting stuff like that in front of your house to make a point like that, really turned me off of Hampton.

Peachtree city is a nice area, but I would imagine it is way more conservative than Hampton. It is Georgia so that shouldn't factor in. Fayetteville is also pretty nice and a little bit closer to ZTL. I live in Fayetteville but if I ever want to do anything I go to peachtree city or Newnan. The schools are great. I graduated from Fayette County High School and it was a good school. Also, this area is in great proximity to downtown Atlanta and the airport. I agree Hampton is a little too rural.

Agreed. Fayetteville is also a great location as long as you're in the Fayetteville that is as far from Clayton County as possible...lol. I wish the proximity to Downtown Atlanta was closer.

Ribbit, what's your status? Are you at ZTL, an ATC candidate or other?

Yeah agreed with the clayton county part. I live closer to peacthree city than clayton county. I am just a hopeful. I applied to pubnat8 and am starting school in jacksonville in the spring. I would like to go to ZTL or somewhere in Florida.

Most people that work in ZTL live in Stockbridge from what I hear. Very nice area. If I can get there I will probably move there too or somewhere along I-75. Fayetteville is very nice but getting to the center can be time consuming since you'll be travelling on side roads and not the interstate too much.

I would still like to know about the Union presence, working environment, etc. We come from a facility where the Union is heavily a part of everything and they keep the controllers and management very divided... I'm sure my friend does not want to be in that kind of environment anymore. You can't get much done here if you wantto better yourself, let alone move around without folks trying to sabotage you in the name of the Union. If I didn't have family here I'd consider moving. They keep up too much drama for folks who want to move on. It's really sad.

Does anyone have any concrete idea of hiring numbers for ZTL for FY 2010? I saw the post that said they would hire 60 people in 2010-2011, but does that mean 60 total for both years, or 60 for each year? I have a TOL for there, waiting on a class date. PEPC in Atlanta in August. All clearances done. CTI. Any info on hiring numbers would be appreciated. And does anyone know (or have a reasonable estimate of) the time frame?

I grew up in Stockbridge. Heading to OKC Jan 4th and back to ZTL. I got lucky. Stockbridge has changed alot since I was a kid and not for the better. I would also say that Fayetteville is slowly doing the same. Depending on the time you want to spend driving. and we do alot of that around here there are some nice surrounding areas. i.e. Coweta county and Pike county

I got selected for ZTL in November and am still waiting for my interview at JAX. How did you set up the tour? I can't find any contact numbers.

google Atlanta ARTCC Hampton Georgia. It will give you address and phone number to the receptionist, then you can ask for training manager.

I did my interview at ZJX as well. Selected for ZTL from the April panels, waiting for a class date. The ZJX interviewer was very nice, but had no info on hiring numbers for ZTL, the only drawback of not interviewing at ZTL. I live in South Georgia, where are you?

In a van down by the river.
There will be around 60 hires for 2011, 8 already picked up for the new year that's all i've heard.
This number will be reduced shortly. The agency is getting overcrowded. They are going away from staffing based on projections and going back to staffing based on actual need. I'm not stating my "source", so take it as you wish, but I'm not one to stir the pot based on rumors...
