I'm 24 years this month... you must've slipped in just before the doors shut because I remember a hiring freeze later that year that lasted a few years. Or maybe that was 91? 92?
The Academy kept on running for at least another year after I went there. I think it closed either late 91 or early 92. I'll be 24 years in February, so....you only got a month over me. o_O

This is an interesting thread. I read the whole thing, and this is what I got from it:

Complainers to the initial post have obviously never trained with a trainer who has been in awhile and knows his stuff. They are generally harder on you but it actually helps you in the long run. This is the way they were trained and it was obviously affective.
It is VERY rare to think of an Ol Boy as a weak stick, but you figure out who the weaker controllers are pretty quick, and they tend to be younger.

I was an OTS hire 4ish years ago and have worked alongside OTS washouts and CTI washouts. The fact is some ppl just cant think the correct way to be successful.

SirMario was like a horny rabid dog the instant he found out there was a real live girl on stuckmic.

Jax hopes Kabe never transfers to where Jax is, because his seniority number would drop, and no one like that. Ever :)

I don't worry about that at this stage in my career, because the people that are above me in seniority that are capable of working level 12 traffic are already doing it elsewhere, and probably very well setup, and with 0 incentive to come to a place like this. The only ones that may think about it are the ones that have spent their entire careers at the lower levels, and are looking to get their high 3 before they retire. Unfortunately, almost none of those that fall into that category, and have tried it end up making it. This is not the place to come and try get your high 3 if you've never worked level 12 traffic before. I've only seen 1 guy above me in seniority transfer to my area that checked out, and he came from Philly, so he already had level 12 experience.

does any other job give you your money back? Why do CTI grads/students think they are owed anything from the govt? If you havent learned yet the govt can make you jump through as many hoops as they want. then at the last minute will pull the rug out from under your feet and walk away like nothing happened. They dont answer to anyone and owe you nothing, sorry.

I don't recall the FAA firing developmentals who wash out, so I wonder why there's people working for the FAA who are nearing retirement or been working for 10+ years, making 6 figures at these lower level facilities and don't care or enjoy their work. Obviously, there is something wrong because that leaves no room for CTI students to get hired who originally wanted to become a controller and who are motivated. Then it comes down to the AT-SAT, which has been said that it doesn't reflect the work or outcome of that individual doing this job.
Good thinking, the FAA should start firing actual controllers near retirement or with 10+ years experience so they can hire some kids who have never spoken to an actual pilot on the radio. As long as the folks who have successfully kept planes separated for 10+ years "don't care or enjoy their work," the CTI kids are clearly an upgrade, right? Wow. Just wow.

Nightingale I totally agree! The system was screwed up and this new change is going to improve a lot! As a Vet though I don't think we as Vet's should all get preference, I think it's complete bullshit actually! Here is why, a lot of us are not stable guys, who the hell should trust a guy to separate aircraft's just because he served in the military and knew how to do a pull up and hold a gun! I get a check in the mail because of what I went through and I should get hired as an ATC because I'm mentally stable and able to react fast and smart to air traffic. That's why its a smart idea to have applicants who have a degree because they were able to stick with it and learn to work through problems. I'm just saying as a Vet myself I think it's not a good idea to put Vet's as preference just because they are Vet's, because my Hell I wouldn't trust more then half the nutcases in my crew with a damn pencil! I guess be grateful for this BQ ha if it does shit!

One post, but Phillymalove will bite.

People that are veterans that actually served do not call our WEAPON a "Gun". This is a dead give away that your post is not genuine.
Second, You sound incredibly stupid by saying that its a smart idea to have applicants who have a degree because they were able to stick with it and learn to work through problems. A real veteran wouldn't say something this stupid. Military members are the first people that can tell you something about "sticking it out" through the tough times. You are trying to hard.

They don't give preference to Veterans. They give preference to veterans who actually did ATC. So in essence, they are giving priority to people who have actually done the job already. Crazy concept huh?

Veterans are given preference regardless. That's why it's called Veterans' Preference. Don't foster ignorance.
