DOD to FAA Save Pay Changes

Here goes the game changer:

As we all know, the FAA typically saves the DOD pay while attending the FAA school house and continuing on to your facility. On the Feb10 bid that will all change. I recently talked to an FAA rep at the Oklahoma City Job Fair and the DOD hiring specialist from FAA HR on the phone. I asked if DOD controllers will have the save pay option. The answer...we are no longer saving pay on the Feb10 announcement. All DOD applicants will be treated as an external applicant under external applicant rules. DOD hires will be paid the FG1 step 10 (Exactly $25,679 + $93 daily per diem) during the school house and once you hit your facility, you will be paid the D3 not to exceed your base pay for the DOD. Your base pay for DOD does not include SSR or locality. Your locality will be adjusted at your facility.

This is definitely a game changer and I didn't expect this. I hope they change their mind on this as there wouldn't be much DOD interest. This can always change, but for now this is what I was told. I will apply anyway to see if they change their minds, but if they don't then I will just wait for a reinstatement bid. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...Good luck!

FG1 pay is 25.6k annually?
What is D3 pay? Better yet, where is the pay scale on this?

Having looked over the DOD pay scale, and seeing what controllers at a lot of FAA facilities make after they are fully qualified, I would still say the FAA is far more lucrative over a lifetime period. At least from what I have read.

According to the Salary Table 2014 Effective January 2014 the FG1 step 10 is $25,679. This updated pay scale was personally handed to me from an FAA rep. This also includes the locality pay. D3 pay will vary depending on the facility you go to. I have the updated 2014 pay scale for all the facilities. If you go to a level 9 or less and you're a GS-13 then you might want to think about your decision. Level 10 or higher, FAA is a better bet period!

FAA pay (Level 10 or higher) IS better than DOD by far!! If you can handle a pay cut at the school house, it is worth it period!

Wow thats interesting. Good news for all those DOD that got picked up on that VRA bid recently! They maybe the last of the save-pay hires. Im wondering if the change only applies to the FEB10 bid considering it wasn't strictly a VRA or REINDOD bid.

If this is true no one with a decent DOD job is going to apply. Look a few steps ahead as well, it is not just 25k at the academy. What do you have to look forward to after that? The needs of the FAA. Level 5 tower? What a joke.

This all being said, the FAA and the DOD fall under the office of personal management. There are rules that dictate pay from OPM despite what HR reps from the FAA may be saying.

The change only applies to the Feb10 bid. All DOD that applied before that will have the save pay.

They're not really doing away with save pay. They're making everybody start fg1 payband doders will just max it out. then go to the the Developmental payband closest to their dod pay. They may max that out too. I don't think this will be the deal breaker for dod hires. Most terminal hires will likely skip the academy anyway. I think the deal breaker is going to be giving up their bird in the bag for whatever lies in the bush after the academy...if they have to go to the academy. I can stand a temporary pay cut, but if I unassed my dod job and ended up in bfe desert lvl 4 tower miles from civilization, I'd be kicking own ass and single again.

I hope you're right. I have an awesome DOD gig at a horrible location. I don't want to be that level 4 tower guy chasing camel spiders...wait a min, just had a flash back from my deployed days.

XrayLimaz I take it you didn't get the mass email last week the VRA applicants got? I'm DoD in a horrible location too but I got that email so thank goodness I'll still have save pay but I don't know what I'd do in your shoes with the chance of going to a super slow tower. I know a lot of the center washouts end up going to places like that, so that lowers the chances. And even if you DO get a level 4, you can transfer somewhere else after a little while. Good luck to ya!

Can anyone confirm this? Again, we have mouths to feed and that big of an income drop for any period of time can really hurt..

No, I didn't apply last year like all the other fortunate folks. I will be in the Feb10 bucket of possible 3K other people. That would suck if they put me in a slow tower, but know money really isn't on my mind...location!

The only way to really tell now is to apply for the Feb10 bid and see what contract they give you. That's what I'm going to do.

XL I hope they change their mind as well. It's just me, so I can make it work coming out of the DoD, but it will hurt none the less. Did they mention if our leave would transfer over, or would we be starting from scratch on that too?

2014 FAA pay scale.jpg
I'm ignorant on the D1-D2 pay band. I saw where XL had posted the pay scale in another thread but what dictates the D pay band (the top of the pay scale was self explanatory with facility level). Thanks South Beach
