I'm curious, if you hire into a lower level tower (7-9), how long after becoming CPC would you be able to hold some decent days off (Fri/Sat, Sun/Mon)?

I understand it depends on a number of factors (# of controllers, retirements, etc), but can anyone give me a general idea? 2 yrs? 5? 10? More?

Depends on the rules of the facility. There are several ways. Heres a couple:

1. At my facility we do it based upon how long you have been in the faa (based upon your okc grad date)

2. Some facilities have it where the day you checked out in the particular facility.

dude there is seriously no way to tell.

i would venture to say that the smaller facilities would have less experience, since the senior guys usually move up to bigger facilities. so, u could end up against junior CPC's.

on the other hand, a lot of the guys just stay there until the end of their careers when they move up to get their "high 3"

this is all opinion. i have no idea of the trends there. there is seriously no way to tell for sure. if u want weekends off it could take u more than 10 years.

As Roddy said, there is no way to tell. Every place will have different circumstances.

I can tell you at my facility you have to be eligible to retire to hold Fri/Sat.

haha, it will be quite a while. You may be able to pull off getting Sunday off in a decent amount of time. The FAA has a thing called sunday pay differential where you get paid an extra 25% to work so some prefer to work it. As for Saturdays... good luck, haha. 10+ is easily the norm.

Are you allowed to "switch" shifts with other controllers? Say your regular days off are Tue/Wed and another controller has Fri/Sat off. You need to be in a wedding or something like that. Could work for him on a tues and have him work for you on Sat if both parties agree?

Or is it just too bad, so sad?

Typically the swap wont happen, to switch RDO's (days off) especially weekend for mid-week, it causes a screwy schedule for both of you, tough to get someone to agree to it.

Typically it is just too bad, so sad....a.k.a bang in sick! You have lots of sick leave, don't abuse it, they will come after you but for a wedding here or there or something important calling in sick is usually the only way out of working.

Shift Swaps depends on the facility and staffing situations. Even as short as we are it usually seems to work. I will work every once in a while for someone like for a wedding.

To answer the original question. Anywhere from 1 to 20 years. I have seen new CPCs get Sun-Mon off their first year they bid. I have seen some areas with some people with 20 years CPC and not have Fri-Sat Available.

One thing you are not even considering. What day does Christmas fall on? Some people with just OK seniority and young kids will pick XYZ days off just to ensure they have it off without a hassle.

Maybe Ahole Supe #3 has Mon-Tue off and wonder why nobody wants to work those days or the ones next to it.

Maybe your low level tower is loaded (then reloads later) with old farts that want to coast into retirement and all the junior people to you move on, you might never get a chance of decent days off there unless you work until 56.

Maybe the place you are going to has already hired all they need for the next 20 years and you are the last one? Maybe you are the first and everybody is retiring next year?

Way too many variables.

Understand. Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like if you want to work traffic for a living, you have to competely let go of a "normal" work schedule.

What's not "normal" about this pay period? :willy:

Sun= 2-10
Mon= 6-2
Tues= 6-2
Wed= 10-6 (the mid for Tues 8 hr "quick turn")
Thur= Off
Fri= 3-11
Sat= 1-9
Sun= 2-10
Mon= 6-2
Tues= 6-2
Wed= 6-2
Thur= Off
Fri= 3-11
Sat= 1-9

You will get use to it.

Nope. I will not get used to it. As soon as I get to my center I'm going to request these hours and raise hell if I don't get them:

M-Thurs : 9-5 (12:30-1:15, 15 min lunch, 30 min power nap)
Fri : 8-3 (12:00-12:45, 15 min lunch, 30 min power nap)
Sat / Sun : Off

Gotta get off at 5 so I can go to the gym during peak hours and check out hotties. Friday's gonna need to get off at 3 so I can get my gym time in early and then hit up happy hour.
Sat / Sun - no chance. Relaxation days. Play softball. Take vacations to Mexico to watch the donkey shows.
