Geo Preference Advice

I'm still early in the game (scheduled to take ATSAT Jan. 10th), but it never hurts to plan ahead. Assuming I do well on the ATSAT, I want to work at an en route center. My first choice is ZTL, since I live here in Atlanta and my wife doesn't want to leave her family.

However, I know we have to choose 2 states we would be willing to move to. My choices would either be TN (ZME) or FL (ZMA or ZJX), due to the geographic location. Which state would you prefer and why? Which state has the better track record for getting their trainees checked out? I've read the horror stories about ZMA, but has anyone heard good? I would love to hear what anyone knows about these facilities good and bad.

Assuming I was end up at one of my secondary facilities, what are the odds they would let me transfer?

Thanks for the advice!

It is only required to list one state, though it is in your best interest probability-wise to select two. I only listed one.

The entire SE US region (exc. Louisiana -- they are hurting badly) is very difficult to acquire, from what I've seen on this board. It's not impossible -- but I do know a friend on here who listed GA for application after application for a year and a half, had a high well-qualified score on the ATSAT, and did not get picked up until they put down another state.

As far as Florida goes, I'd be wary of putting it down at all, especially for en-route only. You could end up at Miami, with the waiting list from Hell.

I'd suggest putting GA down with TN, plus another state, if you can manage it, in the comments section. It is not guaranteed that they will consider what you write, but it's worth a shot if you really do want the job and can swing it with your family. I understand the dilemma first-hand, as I did not wish to move my own family, either, and chose to take a gamble with a single state preference.

Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't mind living in Miami or Jax, but I would hate to wait 5+ years to check out. Have you heard much about Memphis?

I have been searching on the site and i have found some info. on the pay rate for some facilities but to be honest i do not understand how it works. I was hoping somone may know what the starting pay would be if you are selected for a facility in Atlanta or through out Georgia?

Also, go to the section of this site titled Facilities and Pay. It has everything you need to learn about the pay system. The link is on the left-side column of the site...
Just wondering....I went to that link to look at locality pay percentages and only the first page of states linked to a chart showing each respective state's locality pay percentages. Do you think that the original poster just forgot to link to the other states? Basically I was just wondering about NC.

There is a new tool that should be on the site hopefully in the next few days to show you how your pay will progress from Academy to Certification based on your slated facility. It's pretty cool.

A quick question on geo prefs...I have seen places where people have stated that everywhere is in need of people and then others where people have said that there are sections of the country that would be nearly impossible to get into. I guess I am wondering if NC fits into the former or the latter observation? I am totally ignorant to staffing needs of the various offices and thought maybe that I might try to work in NC in the beginning (as it is my home state). However, I am not opposed to moving some where else completely different, especially if there is a place that is good for new ATCs.

People ask this all the time. Call and ask the facilities that you are interested in working at. I understand why people ask on the forum, after all it's a tool to help people right? At the same time it's YOUR future career guys. Take the initiative and call these people to see what their needs are. The people in these facilities know what's going on and are generally helpfull. It's always a good idea to do your homework on these places that you want to work at. Take a tour or two of the places you want to go. After all, your going to be there for a few years at least. It also shows initiative to the people at the facility. It's much more likely some one is going to go out of their way to help you if they have a face to put with a name and they've seen that you are really serious about this and you really want it.

Sorry if this came across as pissy or preachy, it wasn't meant to be :)

Totally not! Thanks for the advice :) I will be sure to give them a shout and see if I can arrange a tour or something of that sort.

From what I hear Memphis Center is probably one of the better places out there. Miami is expensive and you might have to wait a short while to start.

I know this is a little off topic, but can anyone tell me what email address the geographic email is sent from? When I received my invite to take the AT-SAT it was routed to my spam folder. If I hadn't randomly checked my spam folder, I would have been up the creek. I'm just trying to keep this from happening again in the future.

Thanks.

Mizzou, what you're saying is spot on. I've taken tours at SFO, SJC, and OAK over the past few weeks. If you all have the time to take a tour, DO IT! Over the next few weeks, I will be headed back to the facilities to meet with the facility managers to formally introduce myself and ask more questions.

Just call and ask...we do them all the time if we have staffing and aren't too busy.

Kamal,

Even though several facilities in the bay area operate on a 24/7 basis, they only seem to want visitors around M-F 8am - 4/5pm in my experiences. I remember the admin at OAK mentioned that they only like to have visitors around during standard work hours because facilities are usually staffed a lot "thinner" during the evening. She also mentioned weekends were hard too because there's no admin person on duty to sign you in and escort you around the facility.

It's worth asking them though... Try pleading your case and see where it goes.
