What did you bring with them? Enough toys for 3 months, did you rent a UHAUL? How did your kid(s) adjust? Other than our clothes and toothbrushes, I'm trying to figure out what we should bring for the 3 of us. Did your spouse have others she/he relied on? My wife is a SAHM, so I want her to be able to make friends easily since I'll be studying and in class most of the time. I really don't want to have to pack up our 2 bedroom apartment and bring it all with us for 3 months. Thanks for your help everyone!

We rented a 26ft Penske truck and drove to OKC. We sorted most of our stuff while packing and labeled the boxes we needed and didn't need while at the academy. I put the rest of stuff we didn't need in storage in OKC for 3 months. It was nice doing it this way since my first facility was 20 hours away from our home and we didn't have to worry about going back, packing up and moving then. However it was a huge gamble doing what I did. I went all in passed the academy and just happened to get lucky since nothing on my list was remotely close to North Carolina where we are from.

The kids enjoyed the adventure. We bought a family season pass to the zoo and they were able to go there a few times and to a few of the museums. There are a lot of nice parks in the OKC area we took the kids to as well.

Feel free to PM me if ya have any other questions.

Adding to the list of things to do for families, Tulsa has a decent Aquarium. Its not huge but my daughter enjoyed it.

I wouldn't really recommend bringing the family along, but if you do.... OKC is a great town for it, I grew up there. There's a some really nice parks in the burbs as well as in OKC proper, A great zoo that was mentioned, a theme park, and a water park, and the new river area is supposedly very cool too, although I have not had a chance to check it out yet, been pressed for time every time I go home. There is tons to do there, as much as some people on here like to bash on it its not a bad town.

That being said, Its definitely worth mentioning that OKC is not public transportation friendly in the least bit, so it would be best to bring a car for the wife. Okies are super friendly, so depending on where you stay while you are there that shouldn't be an issue.

Okay so this might be a dumb question, but how do people make it money-wise if their significant other and kids stay back at home while you're at the academy? My pay will be cut in half going from my current job to the academy.

That's the main reason I brought my family with me. My wife doesn't work either since with 3 kids child care was costing more than she was making. If you are smart with your per diem you can make it work as long as ya don't go crazy eating out and partying.

Check into Kim's Place. She has a portion of her development that she typically keeps families in. I think some of the wives and kids get to know each other and can be a support system. It's been quite a few years since I was there the last time but I doubt that's changed.

Sorry, I just saw this and hope my response isn't too late. You can find her on Facebook, or I believe she still maintains a profile on here.
