Sure thing! Well umm the process is going very very slow. I haven't received an academy date yet and I was given my TOL in August at the Chicago PEPC.... but yep, I'll let you know!! PM me your e-mail address.

Re: LAX Question

Congrats on receiving your academy date. I am also trying get hired on with LAX tower, I am pubnat 4, well qualified and hoping for January Panels. Any advice that you could give me on what to do before then that could increase my chances of getting LAX would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance and hopefully we will be working with each other in the near future.

P.S. South Park rocks, did you see the episode after the election?

Haha yeah ahhh I didn't do anything to get LAX. Actually I wanted a Phoenix area airport and was more than surprised with LAX. I'm more than happy with LAX though!!

Yep! I did see that South Park episode.

Re: Info LAX

Thanks, but was the approach physically moved to Socal Tracon or is it still in the LA area? Thanks

Re: LAX Question

To the best of my knowledge, no CTI has gotten fully certified at LAX recently, if at all. A friend from my class at OKC went there and started fairly recently. I hope he makes it. I'm pretty darn sure, if you mark CA as preference and indicate that you want LAX, you've got a pretty good chance.

I got offered LAX first, and declined because of the dismal pass rate.

Re: LAX Question

Ohhh yeah. I'm well aware of what I'm getting into. Luckily the ATM told me that if I'm just not on par with the decision-making speed but definitely show potential, they can reassign developmentals within the Los Angeles district.

Re: LAX Question

I took a tour of the LAX tower today and it seemed like a pretty relaxed atmosphere. I asked the guy who was giving the tour what the wash out rate for trainees was and he said it was about 40%, not as bad as what others have been saying. He also said that normally they do not hire guys with no experience, usually they have trainees start off at a lower level tower and then transfer to LAX once they are checked out.

All in all it was a really cool experience for me since it my first time seeing the inside of a tower, the view was amazing from the control room.

I still hope to get hired on to LAX, and after seeing what goes on there I defiantly think that I would be up for the challenge.

Re: LAX Question

I'm quite impressed there are so many people who believe they are ready to step into LAX without any experience. Within the past two years my facility has received 3 LAX washouts, 1 VRA and 2 CTI and they are now doing fine (and that is just my facility). There is one person now that made it through GC but as I have heard is having a rough time in their pro-time. Another guy came from a center and has had his training suspended on GC.

LAX is an interesting beast. All the problems people have are on GC. GC 1 (south ground) is the really busy ground while GC 2 (north ground) is the "chess game". Additionally LA has 3 relatively busy smaller airports within 5 miles from it. There is a tremendous amount of coordination with those airports that can make LC interesting and frustrating on occasions.

The ATM is also the hub manager and does make it possible to get a new assignment to one of her airports if things don't seem to be working out.

On the up side they have just started training new devs on a sim located at the regional office just a few miles from LAX. It is very similar to the nice sims at the academy. I have both seen the sim and talked to one of the consultants (WCG) helping get the sim debugged and it looks quite promising. The view from the sim and the few from the actual cab are surprisingly similar/accurate. Hopefully it enables devs to get through the program more successfully.

I remember being in the academy and prior to it thinking "gee I wish I was able to go to a really big facility right out of the gate". After seeing other people in my class wash out of bigger facilities apart from LAX and realizing the fact that I was a CPC within 7 months of getting to my facility, it makes it well worth taking a stop at a smaller facility to get the basics and confidence needed.

With that said good luck to all the devs that will be joining me soon in beautiful southern California!!!

Re: LAX Question

Since my last post I have toured a few other towers in SoCal. It made me realize that the best career path for me would be to start out a lower level tower and work my way up once I was checked out and fully comfortable with the job.

But if for some reason I was picked for LAX I would definitely give it my best shot.

Where in SoCal do you work if you dont mind me asking?

Yes most definitely give it your best shot if you make it to the big show. I am a CPC and trainer at Santa Monica. Its a fun tower that can get busy during most days of the summer but winter is our slow season.

Good luck.

Re: LAX Question

Hey nickd661 or others,

I have been looking to get into some towers to tour and just wondering if there is a website you got telephone numbers from? I've tried a few searches and haven't found anything yet. I geo-preff'd to lax, smo, lgb, sna... basically all over orange and l.a. county. Let me know your tricks if possible. thanks.
