sorry, you walked into that one...
I've had dreams about middle aged headsets wearing men...Think I should mention that when I go in for the psych test?

Re: What is ZOA like?

ZOA has 3 domestic areas and 2 oceanic areas. the domestic areas have 12 positions each (6 d-side, 6 r-side). the oceanic areas have 8 positions each (2 d-side, 2 r-side, and 4 oceanic sectors). it's easy to figure out which one you would be able to check out faster on. i preferred the domestic areas so that's the one i asked for and got. i was in the east area, or area E. to me that was the best area to be in.

the locality rate there is probably the highest in the nation. i didn't really look at the new locality rates to verify though, so don't quote me on that. 32% is pretty freakin high though. if ur not familiar with the bay area, u get that 32% for a reason. it's insane how much houses cost there. things may have taken a turn for the cheaper in the last 6 months or so because of the economy. either way, $450,000 is about what u will pay for a small house (1900 sq ft).

feel free to ask any specific questions, and i can answer them best i can.

I appreciate that.

Why did you feel the east area was the best to be in?
At what point will I have the opportunity to request an area?

Re: What is ZOA like?

Is ZOA really that bad?
Should I be looking forward to this or dreading it?
It seems like a great opportunity to me.

Give me a heads up if I need to be prepared for something that isn't a usual stressor of ATC.

i thought it was the best because i knew i didn't want oceanic and their non-radar BS. once i got to know people, it just seemed that area east had the coolest people. i had a buddy that was 2-3 months ahead of me and assured me east was the place to go. i quickly agreed. the one downer was that area south and north was high seniority areas, while east had more of the younger crowd. bad to be so low in seniority in the south and north, but also good because it would be quicker before a lot of them retired and u would move up. to be honest though, those in my class that got other areas swear they are in the best area. i guess it's all personal preference.

you won't really get the chance to pick exactly what u want. after you complete your maps in Stage II they will assign an area. they are pretty open to you voicing a preference. i guess i begged hard enough for it and got it. it also depends on which areas are slotted for your particular class. for mine 2 went to pacific south, 2 went to pacific north, 3 went to south, and 2 went to east. noone in my class went to north.

ZOA is actually not too bad a place to work. i had a hard time working indoors and using radar (i was previously 10+ years tower only). i just had a hard time adjusting and eventually preferred to go terminal. if enroute is all your going to know then you could have a totally different experience than i did.

Re: What is ZOA like?

I decided not to attend the PEPC in April; I'll save some money and might even be done with everything sooner than I would have. I should be getting a call from ZOA within the next few weeks to set up a time for an interview.
I'm excited to see the facility.

What might I expect at that interview?

Re: What is ZOA like?

do a search, and u will find the exact questions they ask. it'll be about 10 questions or so. you'll get an oppurtunity to tell them about yourself at the end (or the beginning). use that to tell them whatever you want. it's your best chance to make your feelings known and to try and stand-out from the rest of the crowd.

post who actually does your interview at ZOA. Randy Park is the ATM. just wondering if he will be the one, or if he will designate someone else to do it. if it's the assistant ATM and your VRA then play up your VRA status. the assistant ATM is former military and loves those that have served.

good luck.

Re: What is ZOA like?

I'm former military, but not ATC. I will be attending the PEPC in NYC on the 23rd. As an OTS, is there anything in particular I should be hitting on in the interview? I read the general questions that they ask, but if anyone has some additional insight it would be greatly appreciated. Also, what is the likelihood of receiving a TOL at the PEPC? Do most people get one?

Just try to have your answers make sense and somewhat related to the question... I have yet to hear of anyone not being recommended from their interview.

You will get your TOL at the PEPC, even if you need to do follow up Medical you'll get one.

Re: What is ZOA like?

there are different levels of recommendation by the manager that does the interview. so even though almost everyone gets a recommendation, it is not guaranteed that you'll get a "hire immediately" recommendation.

Anyone in the academy now or anyone who has an academy date that is headed to ZOA? Did you do a tour? I'm trying to make it up there to tour, but the only time I can make it will be on the 4th of July weekend, so the offices will be closed. I've got a call in to see if anyone will be available to show me around. We'll see...
