Hello everyone,
I am very new to this site and I am not sure if I am posting this thread to the right section. Please forgive me, if I am not.
My Name is Shan and I am 24 years of age. I am trying to become an Air Traffic Controller and I am just curious what are the requirements for it? Here is a little about me. I was born and raised in India and moved to USA in 2004. I am a Muslim, and I do speak fluent English. I don't have a good writing skills but I am trying to work on it and taking some writing classes to improve my skills in writing.
I told my few friends that I want to Major in Air Traffic Controller and all of a sudden they were like" Oh man, I think its going to be hard for you to become a Air Traffic controller cuz of My religion( Muslim). They were not being mean, I know them very well but I am very sad because I really wanted to become an Air Traffic Controller in my entire life and is my long term goal. Please some one please help me out this question.

And also the other question- What are the intense of the course? I mean is it somewhat hectic as Pre med and Engineering Majors or something intense than Pre med and Engineering? Also, what are the average requirements in your course work?

Thanks for all of your help and I hope I can get an accurate information from one of you. Thanks again and you all have a great and safe winter.

Regards,
Shan

If you aren't a US Citizen, you can't apply. However, your religion should nor be a factor at all. That's complete discrimination and they absolutely cannot do that. It's the citizenship that'll get you.

Just get a 2 year degree at an approved CTI school. Your degree does not matter that much. Your first priority is to get an 85 or higher on the AT-SAT. You can take the test one year before your graduation date.

Dude you are asking questions that are way to specific for this website. You need to go to an approved CTI school. Check the link in the post above.

Each school will have different pre requisites. You major in whatever the school offers that gets your the CTI certification, again this is different for every school.

I'm a couple hours south of you! Where are you looking at going for school? He's right ^ you will need to contact the school about pre-reqs but you'll want to major, or at least minor in ATC. It was my minor.

Re: Please help me! I have to decide My life work and career.

You are 24, which is still plenty young enough. You mentioned that you ARE a united states citizen. Your religion will have no factor in whether or not you get hired. These are all good things for you.

The only obstacle I could see giving you a harder time than anyone else is the language barrier. I know you said you speak english fluently, but I can tell just by your typing that it is not your primary language.

I would go to www.liveatc.com and just listen to the communications. Controllers/pilots at busy airports can talk extremely fast and it can get hard to keep up with for anyone, much less someone trying to do translations in their head. If you aren't intimidated and think that you'd be able to keep up with it and it really is something you want to do, I would say go for it. Either way I think talking to a CTI school would be worthwhile for you.

I also might add that English is the dominant language for ATC. All international controllers needed to learn english as a second language and learn to speak it while controlling, so it is definitely doable.

Another thing to consider is your Background Investigation/Security clearance. Being a US Citizen is all fine and dandy but they will ask you about your life in India and your family and friends still there. Make sure everyone you associated with wont be a burden on you regarding that.

Re: Please help me! I have to decide My life work and career.

To answer one of your questions, CTI courses aren't anything like pre med. Its just an average major in terms of difficulty. I don't think the background investigation will be as big of a deal as some people might think. My mother was born in and most of that side of my family still lives in Ireland. I had no hassles. I know in today's world with the focus on extremist Muslim terrorist organisations its easy to to forget, but Ireland is unwilling host to several high profile terrorist groups itself.

One other suggestion is if the Indian education system is as influenced by the British system as many former colonies are in my experience, relax a little. The American system is more relaxed, for better or worse. If you end up doing simulations twice as stressed and wound up as your classmates you're going to sink hard and fast.

Re: Please help me! I have to decide My life work and career.

If you are a US Citizen trying to become a controller, you might have to renounce your Indian citizenship. There should be no problems with discrimination.

The school will not be as hard as pre-med or anything like that in that you don't need to go to school for 12 years. Since you are 24, I would suggest looking into a 2 year program like CCBC to get your CTI so that you don't waste time. This is a community college and if you can't pass community college, Wendy's is always hiring (kidding). The skills you need for ATC are a sharp mind and decent memory and you should be able to perform well under stress. Good luck.

What if I become an Aviation Maintenance Technology. Is this a good idea?

If you did that with an ATC minor, that would work. In order for you to get a recommendation (it probably varies depending on which CTI school you're looking at, but...) you will have a certain set amount of ATC classes to complete in order to get the job code.

Riddle (let the hating begin!) offers a good AMT program you could take concurrently with the AT program...or you could major in Aeronautical Sciencem Human Factors, Safety Science, Homeland Security, etc... and get your minor in AT, which is what I did
