Figured I try to dispel some rumors about Pope AFB located in Fayetteville, NC...but I think it might be in vain. I know when I think of Pope AFB/Fayetteville, NC...I don't have much positive to say either!

The way I understand it, the Army is taking over Pope AFB and AFRC is retaining the airfield. The airfield staff, tower and AMOPS appear to be converting to civilian positions, GS10 for the line controllers and GS11 for the WS.

Anyone have recent information on this area...Fayette'nam?

Places/areas to stay away from? School districts to stay away from or gravitate to?

North Carolina is beautiful; Fort BRAGG and Pope are ugly. I spent 6 months there. I would go there for a job though.

Was there from 97-99, town seemed to have calmed down a lot compared to the rumors I had heard prior to arrival. I actually liked living there...low cost of living, 1.5 hours to the ocean. Raleigh is less than an hour away. 5 hours to DC. I lived near Methodist College, NW part of town by several nice golf courses (have quit that game for the last time!). I worked at Simmons AAF just 10 minutes away.

If I lived there again, I would be looking for a house between Pope and Raleigh (most of the nice homes were being built in the area NW thru NE of the city and Pope). I would be sending my kids to private schools (or continue to home school) because ALL public schools suck and I love my kids too much to do otherwise! You only send kids to public schools when you have NO OTHER choice...off the soap box.

I am sure others have more current info on Fayette'nam and some might even be supportive of public schooling...just my 2 cents.

Flyinrico, my girlfriend used to live there and will be moving with me back and she definitely knows the area. I am going there the middle of September to check out the area but right now I am thinking about Hope Mills, NC since her best friend lives there and that area is a great up and coming area. Anything you want to know man let me know I will definitely help.

Thanks X64, that's the kinda information I'm looking for! I've come to realize I'll have to sacrifice my time with a daily commute in exchange for nicer living conditions and peace of mind.

VA...my wife and I are thinking about taking some time off in a couple of weeks and heading up there as well. We're looking at renting a house or appartment for the first year to get a good feel for the place.

You mentioned Hope Mills. Good to hear an "endorsement!" There seems to be quite a few nice apartments in that area. $900-1,000 seems to be the going rate for a higher end apartment...

Oh well, part of being a civilian I suppose...gone are the days of base/post housing. I did check into houing on Ft Bragg/Pope and they said they're not open to DoD employees yet.
