Air Traffic Controllers, please, if you haven't done it or have started and not finished, could you answer some questions?

All your help is really appreciated.

I took the survey. Question: What training would you have controllers take to potentially better communicate with non native English speakers given that there are roughly 6,500 different languages spoken in the world and ENGLISH is the language of air traffic? Seems to me that if someone can’t speak English well enough to communicate then they shouldn’t be flying.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your input.

In order to answer a question like this, I have so far conducted a 1 year, 30,000 word review of the literature and am currently conducting my data collection in order to answer my research questions. The work, which will culminate in a 4-7 year endeavour, will result in the publication of my 100,000 word thesis.

In order to answer your question one would have to read the thesis. There is a lot more to the subject than first meets the eye.

Remember, native speakers are in the minority, we all participate in the 'international' arena of air travel.

Kind regards,

Tyrone
