Hey everyone.

I've been at the Academy since November, and I just got my W-2 from the FAA for 2015. Even though we are living in OK, it says we paid DC state taxes.

For those of you that have been at the Academy in years past, did you say that you were a DC resident part time and claim the DC state taxes?

Thanks for any input!

Wasn't at the Academy at the time, but a similar situation: I was working in one state while claiming permanent residency in another. That year, I just had to file my federal taxes with my state taxes (My home state did not have income tax). wasn't a real big deal. I suspect this is a similar scenario.

FAA HQ is in DC and that's where the money is coming from to pay your salary in Oklahoma.

You will file with DC as a non-resident. They will make you file by mail because DC does not accept electronic filing for non-residents. It was pretty easy.

This seems odd. You are both living and working in OKC. It wouldn't seem that you would have to file anything with DC, just Oklahoma.

Are you guys putting Oklahoma as your previous residence before your facility you got assigned? Or your hometown you came from before going to the academy and just omitting Oklahoma residence since it was a 3/4 month temporary?

Example:

Lived in Ohio 01/01/2015 until
Academy OKC 01/22/2015 - 05/22/2015 (DC Income/temp residesnce) until
Texas facility 05/27/2015 - thru rest of 2015

Just put Texas current and previously lived in Oklahoma or Ohio or both? and then just made income in DC?

Thanks

When I was at the Academy in May 2014 I just paid "state" taxes for PR during my time at the Academy, but that's back when you knew your facility before you went to the Academy. I'd just save yourselves all the headache, don't be a cheap ass, and spend $100 for someone to do it at HR Block.

I have a related tax return question that I was wondering if you guys could help me out with.

I was at the academy from Jan 2015 to May 2015 and didn't pass. I'm completing my return stuff now. Current or former employees, did the FAA send you a 1095-A in the mail? Or do I need to access that on Employee Express? They did send me a 1095-C, but I don't think that form is helpful while filing a return.

Sorry for the random question. I appreciate any help. If there is a more appropriate place to ask this, please let me know!

It depends, but yet, you ought to check the employee express at first. It will take some time while you're filing taxes in paper, so also consider to use some services to do so online-only. For example, this very one for purposes related to W-2 IRS form https://fillable-form-w2.pdffiller.com/ and some other with way more features as well
