Which Deicing System Do You Prefer?

With winter weather coming, now's a good time to think about the three main deicing systems out there: pneumatic boots, TKS and electro-thermal. Sister publication Aviation Consumer is conducting a survey on what pilots think about them. Even if you have experience with only two of the three, we'd like to hear from you. Send a note to aviation_safety@hotmail.com to share your experiences. (The results will appear in a future issue of Aviation Consumer. For subscription information, click here.)

All of our Commanders are equipped with TKS. We can hold 17 gallons of fuild which offers about 3.5 hours of protection in light to moderate and 1.8 hours in severe to insane amounts of ice. I've flown in all sorts of ice at it is wonderful. It's supposed to be on before entering ice but works very quickly to take it off if it's built up. A windsheild sprayer helps clear the windshield but not really useful for a landing as it blurs the window. Just have to make sure you have enough TKS before you takeoff.
